Docker Compose is a command-line utility to set up and run multi container Docker applications. Prerequisites
- You must logged in as non-root user with the sudo privileges.
- Docker must installed on your Ubuntu system.
Install Docker Compose from Ubuntu Repository
It is easy to install Docker Compose from Ubuntu repositories. In Ubuntu repositories it may not have the latest version always but its recommended way and it will provide a stable system and easy updates.
Run the following command to install docker-compose
:
sudo apt install docker-compose
Check it’s version by typing:
docker-compose --version
Installing Docker Compose from Git Repository
Peform the following steps to install docker compose from Git repository:
Step 1 – Download Compose File
Compose installation is straightforward and simple. At first, we need to download the file to a directory that is in the system PATH and make it executable.
Currently, at the time of writing this article, the latest stable version of Docker Compose is 2.12.2
. Before going ahead, visit the Compose repository release page on Github to check latest version. Run the below curl command to download the Compose file into the /usr/local/bin
directory:
sudo curl -L "https://github.com/docker/compose/releases/download/2.12.2/docker-compose-$(uname -s)-$(uname -m)" -o /usr/local/bin/docker-compose
Step 2 – Set Execute Permission
You should give the execute permissions to the file using below command:
sudo chmod +x /usr/local/bin/docker-compose
Step 3 – Check Version
Verify the installation by checking it’s version:
docker-compose --version
It will show something like this:
docker-compose version 2.12.2
That’s it! Docker Compose is installed on your Ubuntu system and ready to use.
Uninstalling Docker Compose
To uninstall Docker Compose, simply remove the binary by typing:
sudo rm /usr/local/bin/docker-compose
