Steam is a digital service to distribute video games developed by Valve Corporation. There are numerous games free and paid games available on Steam store. This article explains how to install the Steam client on Ubuntu 20.04.
Prerequisites
You must be logged in as a user with sudo privileges on your Ubuntu system.
Install Steam on Ubuntu
Installing Steam on Ubuntu is fairly straightforward. Perform the following steps to install Steam on your Ubuntu system:
Step 1 – Download Steam Package
Open the terminal and download the latest Steam .deb package using the following wget command:
wget https://steamcdn-a.akamaihd.net/client/installer/steam.deb
Step 2 – Install Steam Package
Once the download is complete, install Steam with apt:
sudo apt install ./steam.deb
It’s done. At this stage, you have Steam installed on your Ubuntu desktop.
The official Steam repository will be added to your system during the installation process. Whenever a new version is available, you can update the Steam package through your desktop standard Software Update tool or by running the following commands in your terminal:
sudo apt update
sudo apt upgrade
Starting Steam
To start the Steam client, open the Activities search bar, type “Steam” and click on the icon. You also can start the Steam from the command-line by typing steam.
At first launch, it will open a new terminal and install necessary packages. Once you get prompt you should type y and hit Enter key to continue. The terminal will close, and Steam will update its self to the latest version:
It will take few minutes depends on your system and it will start the Steam client.
