How to Install Skype on Ubuntu 22.04

Skype is the most popular application for communication through text, audio and video. You can make free online audio and video calls over the internet with it and it also offers international calling services to mobiles and landlines worldwide at affordable rates. Which is available on Android system, Windows, Linux and MacOS. This guide explains how to install Skype on Ubuntu 22.04.

Skype is not an open-source application hence the standard Ubuntu repositories does not includes it. Skype can be install using a snap package or as a deb package from the Skype repositories.

Step 1. Install using Snap#

Microsoft is maintaining the Skype snap package. It is easy to install and upgrade via snap package. Snaps are software packages and includes the binary all dependencies need to run the application.

You can install snap packages via command-line or Ubuntu software application.

Run the below command to install Skype snap package on your system:

sudo snap install skype --classic

That’s it. Skype is installed now on your Ubuntu system, and ready to use it.

The Skype package will be automatically update in the background when new release is available.

Step 2. Installing Skype with apt & Download latest Skype#

The official Microsoft Apt repositories providing Skype package. Follow the below steps to install it:

First, you have to download the latest Skype .deb package using wget command:

wget https://go.skype.com/skypeforlinux-64.deb

Step 3. Install Skype#

Once the download is complete, install Skype using below command:’

sudo apt install ./skypeforlinux-64.deb

It may prompt you to enter password.

When a new version is released, update the Skype package run the following command on your terminal:

sudo apt update
sudo apt upgrade
